An Appeal for Courage

Last week, my husband returned home from Iraq for his two weeks R&R. Since then, family and friends have peppered him with questions about the war. “Are we trapped in a quagmire? Should we withdraw? Can we win? What do the Iraqis want? Can we trust what the media is telling us?”

For each of these questions, my husband has a thoughtful reply. His responses are cogent, humane and complex. Easy answers are not among them. While my husband has yet to commit his thoughts to paper, another serviceman recently captured them in an article posted at Human Events.com.

In an “An Appeal for Courage,” Navy Lt. Jason Nichols writes:

Recently a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle called me here in Baghdad and asked why the active duty military wasn’t opposing the war in Iraq in numbers similar to those that opposed the war in Vietnam. Not surprisingly, he didn’t print my answer.”
