Gen. Petreaus discusses progress in Iraq

Photo of Gen. David Patraeus prior being promoted to a four-star general. In an April 3rd interview with Jim Lehrer on PBS’s Newshour, Gen. David Petraeus, the senior commander of U.S. Forces in Iraq, discussed recent progress in Baghdad:

“There have been some encouraging indicators in Baghdad, in terms of a reduction in sectarian murders. There have been some families returning; there have certainly been revivals in marketplaces.

It’s still early days. We have been consistent, I think, in saying that it will be months and not days or weeks before we see real indicators of progress”

Though largely ignored by oppositional political figures, Gen. Petraeus’ interview supports John McCain’s statements on the improved situation in Iraq. Not suprisingly, both men also share a cautiously optimistic outlook on the operations’ long-term effectiveness.
